In 2019, Ma Xinyu (aka clang), suddenly succumbed to a wave of mental stress she had never experienced before. Uncontrollable sadness, pain, anxiety became recurring symptoms of her condition, as well as a stark sleep deficit. Dream and reality began to alternate randomly. During that year, Ma spent six hours daily scrolling through the Chinese social media app WeChat, comparing herself to a “mad woodpecker, with my hands aching and aimless.” She decided to become a “micro artist”—an artist solely working on WeChat, holding exhibitions and developing her art practice at the speed of the social media feed.
WeChat moments recorded Ma’s year-long scrolling history, her dreams and her mental collapse. In the exhibition, she showcases her past and projected future through her private social media history. The displayed WeChat feed is a copy of the artist’s active account, which she is continuously updating throughout the exhibition period.
